Indigenous Cultural Awareness

Build understanding & respect for Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives, and create safe spaces at work, and better community relationships.

The Importance of Becoming Culturally Sensitive and Aware

Cultural awareness means being sensitive to the differences and similarities between two cultures when communicating or interacting with members of other cultural groups.

Cultural sensitivity involves inculcating values, attitudes, and knowledge that display openness and respect for different cultures, religions, languages, manner of dress, and communication styles.

The key challenges:

  • Policies that sound good on paper
  • Disconnected training that doesn’t stick
  • Leadership that doesn’t understand the stakes

Practical knowledge of
cultural terms

Cultural awareness is often used interchangeably with other terms, such as ‘cultural safety’ and ‘cultural competence.’ The following definitions will help you understand the meaning of each term.

Practical knowledge of these terms will facilitate effective, appropriate, and safe communication with people of different cultures.

Cultural awareness deep dive

Cultural awareness involves raising people’s understanding of the influence our culture has on how we do things, including how we communicate, what foods we eat, or even how we go about our work.

Being culturally aware means understanding why cultural diversity is important and recognising that not every person will do things in the same manner as we do. Being mindful of this diversity allows us to be more respectful of the way others operate based on their cultural backgrounds.

While you may not be intimately familiar with other cultures, if you at least understand your own culture and how it affects you, you can take the first step in developing a sense of cultural awareness when it comes to interacting with people who may have a different background than yourself.

Real stories

★★★★★

“I was keen to increase my understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Evolve program gave me practical tools and strategies like when and how to give an Acknowledgement of Country. I increased my knowledge in some unexpected areas too, including about privilege. I highly recommend working with Evolve to anyone who values reconciling what has happened in the past and positively impacting how we move forward.”

“I loved connecting with local Aboriginal people at the Evolve program. Together we are now ‘Taking the Bull by the Horns’ on employment strategies for people with a disability. “

“I was asked about why all Aboriginal people drive Valiants. We all laughed, as I explained that Aboriginal people are as diverse as any other and that I drove an MGB sports car. My co-convenor, an older Noongar woman, was relieved that she didn’t get the question as she drove a Valiant! You can imagine the hilarity that followed”.

FAQs

Our educators are experts in cultural awareness training. Here are some of the questions they get asked the most.

What is Indigenous cultural awareness training?
Indigenous cultural awareness training helps people and organisations build a genuine understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, protocols and perspectives — and turn that understanding into everyday behaviour at work. Evolve Communities’ Indigenous cultural awareness training is built around our tried-and-tested 7 Steps to Reconciliation and Allyship® framework, taking participants from foundational knowledge through to practical action, using a “no blame, no guilt, no shame” approach that keeps people engaged rather than defensive.
Is there a difference between “Aboriginal cultural awareness training” and “Indigenous cultural awareness training”?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but the distinction is worth knowing. “Aboriginal” refers to the many diverse Aboriginal nations of mainland Australia, Tasmania and the offshore islands. “Torres Strait Islander” refers to the peoples of the Torres Strait Islands, who have a distinct Melanesian heritage, history and culture. “Indigenous” is the broader term covering both groups. Aboriginal cultural awareness training is a perfectly valid — and commonly searched — way to describe this learning, but “Indigenous cultural awareness training” (or “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness training”) makes sure Torres Strait Islander peoples aren’t left out of the conversation. It’s respectful to use “peoples” (plural) and to always capitalise Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Indigenous.
What does Indigenous cultural awareness training actually cover?
Our programs work through seven core areas: Reconciliation and why it matters at work; diversity, identity and stereotypes; our shared history, including intergenerational trauma and the Stolen Generations; communication styles and unconscious bias; family, kinship and cultural leave; privilege and its role in closing the gap; and becoming an active Ally. Participants leave with practical skills for engaging respectfully and confidently with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues, clients and communities — not just theory.
Who should take part in Indigenous cultural awareness training?
It suits entire workforces as well as more targeted groups — leadership teams, RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) committees, HR and D&I teams, and frontline or care-facing staff. Because the content and outcomes stay consistent across formats, many organisations start with an all-staff online course, then deepen the learning for leaders and RAP committees through workshops or a leadership program.
Is the training delivered online, in person, or both?
Both, and they can be combined. The 7 Steps® Online Course is a self-paced, 45-minute program suitable for an entire organisation and can be integrated into your LMS. For a deeper, more experiential learning experience, our Yarning Circle Workshops bring an Accredited Facilitator team — one Indigenous, one non-Indigenous — to your workplace in any Australian capital city. Webinars and a Yarning Circle Webinar Subscription are also available for teams who want to keep building cultural awareness throughout the year.
Who facilitates Evolve’s Indigenous cultural awareness training?
Every program is Indigenous-led. Evolve Communities is a Supply Nation-certified business co-directed by Aboriginal Elder, educator and author Aunty Munya Andrews, alongside non-Indigenous community engagement specialist and award-winning learning designer Carla Rogers. In-person sessions are always co-facilitated by one Indigenous and one non-Indigenous Accredited Facilitator, modelling the Allyship the training is designed to build.
How much does Indigenous cultural awareness training cost?
Pricing depends on the format, group size and depth of program — from a single online course licence through to a multi-part leadership and workshop program across your organisation. Because every organisation’s Reconciliation journey and budget is different, we tailor a package rather than quote one fixed price. The best next step is to book a consultation so we can recommend the right mix of online, workshop and leadership options for your goals.
Can Indigenous cultural awareness training lead to a professional qualification?
Yes. Once your team has built foundational cultural awareness, people leaders, HR staff and RAP committee members can go further with Evolve’s Ally Accreditation Program — a pathway that develops the confidence and skills to be a genuine Ally to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and to champion Reconciliation within your organisation.
How is the impact of the training measured?
Every program is evaluated with pre- and post-training assessments, so organisations can see measurable shifts rather than relying on anecdotal feedback. Across our programs, participants consistently report high satisfaction and increased confidence in Allyship, and organisations report sustained cultural shift and improvements in Indigenous employment, recruitment and retention.
How do we book Indigenous cultural awareness training for our organisation?
Book a consultation with our team, and we’ll help you map out the right combination of online learning, workshops, webinars and leadership or accreditation pathways for your organisation’s size, goals and Reconciliation journey.
